The defining characteristic of a cenotaph is that the remains of the person or people it commemorates are buried elsewhere, making a cenotaph a memorial marker, rather than a grave marker. The monument is to honor British scientist Sir Isaac Newton, though he is buried in another location. 1 It was first unveiled on 31 March 1922 by the Prince of Wales (later Duke of Windsor and King Edward VIII).
